11/24/2024, Sunday - Explored Mission Nombre de Dios

On Sunday morning we walked over to the Mission Nombre de Dios (Name of God Mission) that was established in St. Augustine in 1565.

Cara's mother would have loved this place, so, of course, she came along for the visit. Here is Flat Deedra at The Great Cross.

There is a really neat Rosary Garden here.

This is the crucifix at the end of the rosary chain, and each of the posts with balls represent the beads of the rosary.

Flat Deedra at a small shrine to the Virgin Mary in the Rosary Garden.

This is a statue of Father Francisco Lopez de Mendoza Grajales, the founder of the mission.

A little history about the founding of St. Augustine, the United States' oldest city.

Cara's mother had an affinity for St. Francis of Assisi because of his association with animals, so here is Flat Deedra visiting his statue here. Cara sat here for a bit, said the Prayer of St. Francis, and thought about her mother.

Cara's mother also prayed to the Virgin Mary (a.k.a. Our Lady of La Leche), so Cara had to visit the chapel built in her honor.

Cara sat in here for a bit praying for her mother and other loved ones. Flat Deedra felt compelled to join in. :)

The grounds are really beautiful here, and we really enjoyed exploring this unique, historic place.
