Unity Island sits in the Niagara River, separated from Buffalo by the Black Rock Canal. We crossed onto Unity Island on the southern bridge pictured here.Broderick Park, at the south end of the island, was used as an Underground Railroad station during the US Civil War, because Canada is just on the other side of the river. At the very southern tip of the island is one end of the Bird Island Pier. We plan to come back and walk that sometime.Another view of the bridge we on which we crossed over the Black Rock Canal to Unity Island.Off to see the north end of the island. The middle of the island is taken up by a water treatment plant, so there is basically this pathway that connects the parks at the two ends of the island. It took us a minute, but we found the path to the pier at the north end of the island. The Black Rock Lock on the canal that separates Unity Island from Buffalo, NY.Proceeding out to the end of the pier on the north end of the island. At the north end of the island looking at the Niagara River and Canada. There are always lots of boats out on the river.Loads of people go out to Unity Island every night to go fishing, and you can see a few of them in the distance. We decided to head out for food and take the northern bridge off the island.Hmmm, this path is looking a little overgrown...Womp womp! Riverwalk closed! :(Not sure where the breakdown in the order process occurred, but it seems like it has been more than a little while. We just had to make our way around to cross on the north bridge vehicle lane.We had a delicious dinner at Buffalo Sushi Express in the Black Rock neighborhood. Eric had a Salmon Roll (at left), and we shared two vegetarian rolls: a Green Roll (center, with seaweed salad on top), and a Sweet Potato Roll.
