8-30-2026 Sunday Ride Up the Nickel Plate Trail
Sunday, August 30, 2026
It was a very nice Sunday afternoon so we decided to go on a bike ride with friends. We packed a lunch and went on a circular ride up the Nickel Plate Trail to Fishers, over to Carmel, then back to Broad Ripple.
Ride facts
Distance: 32.57 miles, starting in Indianapolis, heading up the Nickel Plate Trail toward Fishers, looping through Carmel, and returning to Broad Ripple.
Route: Broad Ripple / Indianapolis → Nickel Plate Trail → Fishers → Carmel → Broad Ripple.
Photo log

This is the start of the the ride on the trail. This is the Nickel Plate Trail which used to be a railroad track a few years ago. The trail is almost completed now.

This is still a working cement business that the trail passes. They had to divide themselves in half to accommodate the trail.

Obviously the trail is smooth and nice. It is brand new. This section just got completed last year.

There are a few road crossings, but there are buttons to press to conjure up a traffic light.

This is the problem part! The trail at this point goes under an interstate that is under construction. So, the detour is long and there is Indy's largest collection of malls and shops to navigate.

Everybody saw this deer by the side of the trail.

This long collection of painted rocks is a rock snake.
Ride notes
The trail was smooth and new through the completed sections, with a few road crossings controlled by push-button lights. The rough part was the construction detour under the interstate, where the trail dumps into a busy mall-and-shopping area before the route settles back down.
